Prof. Byron J. Good: The importance of culture and mental health in relation to one another

On Thursday, 9 March 2023, the class of Psychology and Culture conducted a guest lecture with Prof. Byron J. Good, a Professor of Medical Anthropology in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School alongside Prof. Subandi, M.A., Ph.D.

The lectures mainly talk about how mental health problems could emerge after the happenings of a conflict. It focuses on the effect of culture towards mental health and vice versa. In this context, Prof. Byron shared about the well-being of people in Aceh post-tsunami in 2004. Prof. Byron developed mental health interventions by assessing trauma between people in Aceh after experiencing the Tsunami. read more

Event Recap – Guest Lecture ‘Universal Design’

On Tuesday, 21 February 2023, the class of Children and Adolescents with Special Needs conducted an International Guest Lecture with Prof. David Evans from Sydney School of Education and Social Work, the University of Sydney. The main topic of the lecture is about ‘Universal Design for Learning’ which highlights the notion that various objects can be used by many people including people with disabilities with the development of universal design. According to the Centre of Excellence in Universal Design, Universal Design is where an environment has the design and composition that can be accessed, acknowledged and utilized primarily by all people regardless of their age, size, ability, or disability. The term ‘universal’ is applied since it’s capable of meeting the needs of people and beneficial for everyone. read more

Class of Psychology of Emotion Held Mini-Research Poster Exhibition

On Friday, 9th December, the class of psychology of emotion conducted a mini-research exhibition in the form of posters related for their final research project. The exhibition was held at Hall D Faculty of Psychology UGM and it was hosted by Galang Lufityanto, Ph. D. There are various topics of the poster with the main theme of an individual’s emotion. The titles consist of ‘The Correlation between Loneliness and Jealousy: Comparing Dutch and Indonesian Culture’, ‘The Relationship between Nostalgia, Emotions, and Songs for Indonesians’, ‘Guilt as an Indicator of Pro-Environmental Behavior in Indonesian Students’, and ‘Frustration and Goal Proximity.’ read more

IUP Students Conduct Field Studies at The Grhasia Mental Hospital

On Friday, 25th of November, the class on Mental Disorder conducted a field study at Grhasia Mental Hospital. The activities consist of several sessions, including an introduction to the mental hospital, learning materials, and real-time observation of the mental hospital patients. The first session was the mental hospital’s introduction by the Grhasia Mental Hospital representative. The session mainly tells about the history and general information of the hospital, its vision and mission, and the various services they provide. The mental hospital offers various services, including a psychological clinic, rehabilitation clinic, mental health service, counseling, physiotherapy, and psychoeducation. read more

IUP Student Joined a Mindfulness Workshop by MyndfulAct

On Friday, 18th of November, students from the Psychology of Emotion class conducted a field study on ‘mindfulness’. During the session, the students joined a mindfulness workshop by a community named MyndfulAct. This workshop aimed to focus on what’s going on in an individual’s self and being relaxed when facing any situation. The people from MyndfulAct are experienced in teaching mindfulness as they deliver their ideas about mindfulness in this activity. The first session consisted of a journaling activity where participants wrote about what they would do if their friends needed help and what they would do if they needed help. read more
