In the new academic year of 2022/2023 during the odd semester, IUP Psychology has successfully opened their gates to welcome exchange students from outside of the country. The students are mostly from countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and Australia. The exchange students are capable of joining several courses that are offered alongside with the other IUP students in accordance with their interests. To welcome the exchange students, our faculty were preparing a welcome event for them in order to shape their knowledge regarding the culture in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta and the rules and regulations in the Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University. The first event was held on 10th & 12th August 2022 through Zoom meeting with the main topic of discussing the Introduction to IUP and Explanation of the Academic Regulation. On the second day, 12th of August, the topic of Cultural Values in Indonesia was discussed with Ms. Metta and Ms. Nuning. There are several cultural values that were presented, including important phrases that can be used on daily basis, sexual violence, and local traditions. The event ended with the hope that the exchange students will be able to adapt with the new environment and enjoy their stay in Yogyakarta, especially in conducting their study in IUP Psychology, Gadjah Mada University.
Andhila ‘Lila’ Sasadara is a third-year undergraduate student from IUP Psychology, Gadjah Mada University, Batch 2020. Recently, Lila has just finished her short course as part of taking the International Academic Exposure program in South Korea, specifically at Yonsei University for their summer school program, known as Yonsei International Summer School. According to Lila, this program is very beneficial for conducting a study abroad within a short period of time. The summer program lasted for 6-weeks, students can enroll in a maximum of 3 courses with a total of 12 credits. Students can study about their designated courses while enjoying the city of Seoul and its culture. For Lila, she enrolled in 3 courses which include Media Psychology, Introduction to Media Study, and Korean Topics related to globalizations and multiculturalism. The reason she chose those courses is to relate with the study of psychology and turns out, the courses are heavily focused on human’s behavior and several psychological theories are mentioned within those courses. The chosen courses also inline with the mandatory internship courses which are implementation of learning media, information technology, interdisciplinary approach in psychology, and contemporary issues in psychology. Thus, this program makes it easier to convert my credits from Yonsei University to my transcript in Gadjah Mada University since the courses are inline with the study of Psychology. Another point, the lecturers are nice and genuine in giving scores for the students so it really made Lila grateful for enrolling for this program. Overall, the experience in conducting short-courses at Yonsei University was very valuable and it’s a great opportunity for choosing the International Academic Exposure category if students’ prefer the shorter period of student exchange. In obtaining the information for the upcoming International Academic Exposure programs, students can visit https://oia.ugm.ac.id/ for more options in selecting programs for taking the International Academic Exposure by International Undergraduate Program, Gadjah Mada University.
Today, we are going to chat with one of IUP foreign students, Nao from the batch of 2019! From Nao, we got to learn about his experiences in studying in Yogyakarta, specifically in IUP Psychology UGM. According to Nao, between Indonesia and his hometown, Malaysia, in terms of studies is quite different. In Malaysia, they have primary school for 6 years and secondary school for 5 years which lasts for 11 years in total, while Indonesia has 12 years of education in total. After they finish secondary school, they have to get their diploma before taking their degree. Nao’s first impression towards Yogyakarta is quite unique since at first, he didn’t know the existence of Yogyakarta but his mother recommended him to study in Yogyakarta, specifically in University of Gadjah Mada. Nao felt the connection between him and Yogyakarta and eventually he’s very happy to be in Yogyakarta, especially surrounded by its lively atmosphere, people and culture. In terms of studying in IUP Psychology, Nao is delighted with education systems where the lecturers, friends, seniors and assistants are all supportive. According to Nao, IUP Psychology also has outstanding academic records, advantageous educational programs such as college life and thesis writing techniques which are not only important for learning in degree life, but also prominent in terms of how we’re going to pursue our life in the future. Today, we are going to chat with Faiz! An IUP Student from batch 2021 who had recently won a national essay competition in Kediri. The competition was held by a private university in Kediri, with the central theme of business innovation. The participants have to come up with ideas about business plans which have the best responses in addressing challenges of the economic circumstances in era 5.0. Even though the theme is quite different from psychology, Faiz still applies some psychological aspects to his business plan. He integrated elements from economics, business, and technology into psychology in developing mental health ads for workers and how it could also be implemented in institutions. Faiz is interested in business economics since those topics are relevant in our daily life. As a psychology student, it is also essential to study in other fields outside psychology since integrating psychology with different areas could further enhance the limitations of psychology from a broader perspective. It could also develop psychology as an aspect that would be more beneficial for society. According to Faiz, psychology is a flexible field of study to integrate with other areas. He encourages us to obtain other knowledge, whether it’s programming, editing, languages, marketing, etc., to develop further opportunities for an individual to explore. Faiz’s motivation in joining the competition is to challenge himself to be more creative and innovative and get out of his comfort zone and be more adaptable to various life situations.
“To hear for life, listen with care.” Over 5% of the 430 million world residents require rehabilitation to address their ‘disabling’ hearing loss. This includes 34 million children (WHO). Inclusive education is the most effective way to give all children a fair chance to go to school, learn and develop the skills they need to thrive (UNICEF).
17 March 2022 – A month ago, a collaborative work between Indonesia and Malaysia (UGM, USM and UPSI) was held in order to remember World Hearing Day. The purpose of the event is to learn about learners with hearing impairment from the perspectives of Malaysia and Indonesia through “Hearing Care across the Lifespan and Education”. Dr. Elga Andriana utilizes the event as an educational enhancement for International Undergraduate students in the ‘Children and Adolescents with Special Needs’ class. The main purpose is to introduce students with international collaborative work through an international program held by the lecturers. The lecture conducted by Elga Andriana from the University of Gadjah Mada is about “Student Voice on Hearing Loss and Psychological Impact Across Lifespan”.
