Alumni’s Story – Clara Michel, and her Journey from UGM Psychology to Edinburgh and LPDP Scholarship

Meet Clara Michel, an alumna from UGM’s Psychology Department, class of 2019, who is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in International Human Resource Management (IHRM) at the University of Edinburgh. Michel shares her inspiring journey and offers insights into why she chose her program and how her experiences have shaped her academic and professional growth.

Choosing The Right Path for Master’s Degree

Michel had some time working in human resources (HR), but she quickly recognized that in order to advance in her career, she required a deeper understanding. She acknowledges, “I felt like I jumped into a career without knowing how to do it right.” Although experience is a wonderful teacher, Michel desired to be more ready before making a long-term commitment. She decided to continue her education in HR, but this time she would study it from a business and management standpoint.

Why Edinburgh and LPDP?

For Michel, Edinburgh was not only a stunning city but also a distinguished university with an esteemed curriculum. “The CIPD has accredited the MSc IHRM program, demonstrating its legitimacy among HR professionals in the UK,” she continues. Her initial option for scholarships was LPDP because of its many categories and generous support, which includes a program that helps scholars get used to new surroundings.

LPDP Preparation

Michel stresses that anyone hoping to apply for the LPDP should start planning early. “Definitely look out for your grades, but also find what you’re passionate about,” she suggests. She encourages students to conduct in-depth study, get in touch with recent recipients of scholarships, and arrange relevant activities like research projects or internships that match with their desired programs. When Michel looks back on her experience in the International Undergraduate Program (IUP) at UGM, she emphasizes how it helped her be ready for college applications, especially how IUP’s workshops and skill-building opportunities gave her more tools she would need in the future.

Words of Inspiration

Michel’s journey wasn’t without its challenges, and she urges students to keep persevering. “If you fail, get back up again because there are more opportunities to come,” she says. Michel’s message to future scholarship hunters? “Know yourself, take time to do your research, and choose what aligns with your values.”
